A total of 18 minutes and 51 seconds of stoppage time was added to the second half, marking the longest added time ever recorded in a single period of a World Cup match.
Norwegian referee Espen Eskås initially signaled 10 minutes of added time at the end of the match, but the game was extended further due to several interruptions.
Croatia defender Joško Gvardiol appeared to equalize in the 90+14th minute, but the goal was disallowed for offside after a VAR review.
The match ended with a 2–1 victory for Portugal, sending the Portuguese side through to the next round.
