Another Record for Messi
Several remarkable statistics emerged following the final Round of 32 matches at the FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
According to AXEBER.COM, citing FIFA's official website, the Australian national team has once again failed to win a World Cup knockout match.
Australia has now gone four consecutive knockout-stage matches without a victory. The Socceroos previously lost to Italy (1–2) in 2006, Argentina (1–2) in 2022, and most recently suffered another 1–2 defeat to Egypt, extending their winless streak.
Meanwhile, Argentina captain Lionel Messi has added another milestone to his legendary career. At the age of 39, the forward became the oldest South American player to score in the knockout stage of a FIFA World Cup.
Messi surpassed the previous record held by Uruguay's Obdulio Varela, who scored against England at the age of 36 during the 1954 FIFA World Cup.
The Colombia national team has also impressed, opening the scoring in three of its four World Cup matches. The only exception was its goalless draw against Portugal.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to conclude on July 19.
