Are Supermarket Apples Dangerous?

03 İyul 2026, 18:29 0 baxış

Although apples sold in supermarkets are generally considered a healthy food, the processing they undergo before reaching store shelves has raised some concerns. Australian gastroenterologist Dr. Paul Froomes has explained why he avoids eating supermarket apples and outlined the reasons behind his decision.

According to international media reports, apples naturally produce a thin layer of wax that protects the fruit from drying out and spoiling. However, during industrial processing, apples are thoroughly washed, removing this natural protective coating. To compensate and extend shelf life, manufacturers often apply an artificial food-grade wax.

What are the risks of artificial wax?

According to Dr. Froomes, the main concern is not the wax itself but the pesticide and insecticide residues that may remain trapped beneath it. The artificial coating can make these substances more difficult to remove with water alone.

To demonstrate this, Dr. Froomes scraped a thick layer of wax from a supermarket apple using a knife. He pointed out that many people eat apples with the skin on, unaware that it may be coated with artificial wax.

Should you avoid eating apple skin?

The gastroenterologist emphasized that apple skin is highly nutritious. It contains much of the fruit's fiber, polyphenols, and other beneficial compounds that support gut health by nourishing beneficial bacteria and helping maintain a healthy intestinal lining.

However, he advises consumers to be cautious when eating apples purchased from supermarkets.

What does the expert recommend?

If you buy apples from a supermarket, Dr. Froomes believes it is safer to peel them before eating. Whenever possible, he recommends choosing organically grown apples that have not been coated with wax or treated with unnecessary chemicals. Such apples can generally be eaten with their skin.

How can you remove the wax coating?

Experts recommend washing supermarket apples thoroughly under warm running water while gently scrubbing them with a soft brush or sponge. If the wax layer is particularly thick, wiping the skin with a damp cloth containing a few drops of ordinary white vinegar before rinsing the fruit thoroughly with clean water may help reduce the coating.

It is worth noting that, in response to consumer concerns, some major supermarket chains in several countries have begun gradually phasing out the use of artificial wax coatings on apples.
