Can Weddings Be Held During Muharram? – Elshad Miri
There Is No Islamic Ban on Weddings During Muharram, Says Elshad Miri
The Quran, the sole and primary source of Islam, contains no prohibition against holding a wedding or getting married in any particular month or on any specific day. Whether to marry during Muharram is therefore a matter of personal choice.
Theologian Elshad Miri made these remarks in an interview with Axar.az while commenting on the tradition of postponing weddings during Muharram.
According to Miri, if a family or a particular lineage associates certain dates with mourning or painful memories, choosing to avoid celebrations on those dates is a personal decision rather than a religious requirement.
“There is no such prohibition during Ramadan, May, January, or Muharram. People's decisions about whether or not to hold a wedding on a particular day or in a particular month should be respected. However, it is not accurate to present this as a religious rule.
In Azerbaijan's western regions, it has long been customary to hold weddings during Muharram, while in the southern regions, the tradition has been to avoid them. This is a cultural practice and has nothing to do with religion,” he said.
